Ayurveda – Ancient Indian Natural Healing

I recently attended a very interesting talk about Ayurveda. This is an ancient system of natural healing, originating from India, approximately 5000 years ago.

Ayur – means life and veda – means science or knowledge. The Ayurvedic approach is holistic, much like reflexology. The principle is the balance between mind, body and soul. This is determined via establishing the type of person you are and your general constitution. The 3 doshas of Ayurveda (energy centres) are related to the elements – earth, wind, water, and fire. These doshas are called Pitta, Kapha, Vata. The majority of humans will have traits from all of the three, but one or two will dominate. This is established via a quiz revolving around personality/health/lifestyle. There are many to go at online!

In a nutshell, the Ayurvedic approach is a guideline to live your life to it’s full potential for daily and seasonal routine, encompassing health, diet and behavior. The system is becoming more known about and accepted in the western culture.

Ayurveda is an interesting concept to talk about with our reflexology clients – as the focus is always on balancing the energies by modifying our diet and lifestyle. This may well involve small tweaks here and there, but could actually make a significant difference to our overall wellbeing!
